I have hard that in some Buddhist temples
there is a gong placed just inside the entrance. All who enter to
practise meditation strike the gong as they go in. At first, this may
seem inconsiderate. After all, there you are sitting silently trying to
meditate and people keep banging on the gong! How disturbing. But there
is method in this madness. The reverberations of the gong recede deeper
and deeper into the silence, thus providing an excellent medium for the
practice. Here, again, is a demonstration of our principles of sound
and silence.
