Some people find that it helps them to communicate with their guardian angel, or to connect with it for the first time, if  they know its name, for traditionally all angels have names.  There are various ways of doing this, all of which involve a period of purification of at least 24 hours.  During this time there should be no sexual activity and a minimal intake of  addictive and stimulating substances.  Meat is best avoided as are spicy foods which can be stimulating.  The idea is to calm the whole nervous and energetic system.  This way we can be at our most receptive and initiative.

The most straightforward way of  divining your guardian angel's name is to write every consonant in the alphabet on a little square of card - if  you have a Scrabble set, the letters are ideal - and put them all in a bag.  Light a white candle and burn some incense, ideally frankincense or copal and myrrh.  Now after pausing to center yourself, state your intention with an invocation along these lines:

Dear Divine Angel
Who has always been
My protector, guide, and ally,
Please guide my hand to draw the letters
That spell your holy name,
So that I may write it upon my heart
And honor you as the friend thou art.
When I call your name please be with me
And show me so I can clearly see
The path of light and of love.

Now take a letter from the bag and write it down on a blank piece of paper.  Return the letter to the bag, shake the letters around, and take out another.  Repeat this process until you have written down three or four letters - let your intuition guide
you as to how many.  Say you have drawn out the three letters M,D, and R, you then fleshout the name with the vowels of your choice adding the letters EL at the end.  You might then come up with  "MaDRiEL."  or  "oMDiRiEL."  Try out different combinations, always keeping the original consonants in the same order. You are bound to come up with a name that sounds right.  This will be the name of your guardian angel.

Don't worry if this seems an irrational or arbitrary method. You are allowing the Universe, or rather your guardian angel, to guide you in a very straightforward way.
